2012 President’s Day Lecture, Walmart: The High Cost of Low Price, NUCALLS and more!

From affairs, scandals, debt and aligning with corrupt regimes, many of our former presidents have had quirks that reveal that the admiration many U.S. citizens have for their presidents is not always merited. Today from 2:45-4:00PM in the Raytheon Amphitheatre, The Political Science Department will hold a “2012 President’s Day Lecture—From Supremely Reverent to Utterly Bizarre: Portrayals of the Presidents, From Washington to Obama.” Come discover some mysteries of the White House and learn the reason why we have a long weekend every February in honor of our former heads of state.

Did you know that Wal-Mart is currently planning to open its doors in Roxbury?! Many of you are probably thinking, “Yipee! Wal-Mart is soo cheap! This is totally perfect for my college budget” But today from 6-7:30 in 104 West Village G, come learn about Wal-Mart’s negative impact on communities, its effect on local economies, people and the environment. The Social Justice Resource Center, HEAT, Slow Food NU and PSA will be facilitating a dialogue surrounding the “High Cost of Low Price.” Come learn the dangers of this massive corporation and  how you can join a campaign to prevent Wal-Mart from invading!

Tonight NUCALLS in conjunction with the ISSI will be hosting its first NUCALLS World Tour from 6-9PM in McLeod Suites! All of Northeastern’s most prominent cultural clubs are teaming up to bring you some amazing exotic food, cultural music, souvenirs, and recount foreign experiences! Plus, brush up on your language skills and learn how you can get involved in NUCALLS or any other cultural group on campus!

As Spring Break is fast approaching, many Huskies are rushing around, studying feverishly for midterms and are in an overall state of panic. But have no fear, the end is in sight, and tomorrow morning from 9-10AM, the Spiritual Life Center invites you to “Take a Human Break!” Come enjoy a cup of coffee, and grab a bagel or muffin. This is a great “TGIF” opportunity to relax, meet other students, faculty and staff from the University!

Co-op Spring Break, B-Ball, Prom and Ash Wednesday

For many of you taking classes this semester, Spring Break is just a hop, skip and a jump away. Meanwhile, many of us on co-op don’t even know when Spring Break is! As campus will begin to vacate the week of March 4th, Co-op Connections will be hosting co-op spring break events to keep all of us on the 40-hour-a-week grind in good company! Tonight from 6-7:15PM in 305 Shillman Hall, The Northeastern University Social Enterprise Institute welcomes distinguished MIT Professor Iqbal Quadir, founder of Grameenphone—the  largest telephone company in Bangladesh. Grameenphone provides phone service to more than 100 million rural people and annually generates close to 1 Billion Dollars. Professor Iqbal Quadir will be here to discuss the importance of technology, entrepreneurship and innovation for market specific products. Also tonight, from 7-10PM in afterHOURS, Tastemakers Magazine will be presenting its 27th issue with an annual PROM celebration! There will be a photo booth to capture as many timeless prom photos as you could ever imagine, a crowing of a Prom King and Queen, and some giveaways! Dressing up is not required but is highly encouraged! The event is free and is NU+1! Don’t forget your dancing shoes!

Today, the Spiritual Life Center will be hosting Ash Wednesday Worship. At 12:00pm there will be an Ecumenical Christian Service (combined service for Catholics and Protestants). At 5:30PM and 7:30PM, The Catholic Center will sponsor Catholic Masses with Ashes. All three services will be located at the Fenway Center and are open to all!

Pint with the President, A Marketing Maniac, and MARDI GRAS!!!

Today, February 21st, from 12:00-1:30PM in 320 Shillman Hall, The Regional Administrator for Environmental Protection’s Agency, Region  1 invites YOU to participate in a conversation regarding President Obama’s State of the Union Address, and how it relates to energy, the environment and the economy. This discussion will focus on the importance of youth involvement in environmental jobs and the environmental movement.

Tonight, February 21st, if you’re 21 or older, come enjoy a “Pint with the President” from 5-7PM in the Varsity Club at Matthews Arena! It is rumored that Northeastern’s Mardi Gras event is the best North of New Orleans! Ever wishing to clear your mind and take a step away from the noise and bustle of the city? Right at the end of the Orange Line at Forest Hills, this wish can come true. Just a short walk from the T, you can find yourself escaping into the beautiful Arnold Arboretum. Sponsored by Harvard University, this 265-acre green serves an oasis at any time of the year. Even in the winter month of February, the Arboretum is home to vast wildlife and foliage. Can’t help being captured by the beauty and intricacy of the Christian Science Center every time you walk on Mass Ave or to the Pru? Well, stop staring and step inside! The Mother Church, as Christian Scientists call this captivating piece of architecture and service, offers free tours every day of the week except Mondays. As college students looking for something to do on a rainy day or to cost-efficiently expand your worldly knowledge, this is the perfect opportunity! Science

Boston is home to an overwhelming amount of museums and resources that would be a shame to not take advantage of as a student. The Museum of Science (located on the green line at Science Park) is one of these cases! If you have not already had the opportunity to check out what this place has to offer or are ready for more, don’t deny yourself. This weekend, the Museum of Science is premiering a simulator experience at a cost of only $5. The full-motion simulator takes you on a journey through space, the deep sea, and so much more. TGIF! It’s a big weekend for the Huskies–Athletes, Models and Greek hosted events!

Many of us college students have trouble cooking and tonight we’re in luck because PAAC will be helping out some students who have not been blessed with a culinary mastermind!  Stop by ISSI tonight from 5-7PM as the Pan Asian American Council hosts “PAAC Can Cook.” PAAC will be showcasing some of their culinary talent and teaching students how to cook some of their favorite dishes!

And this is a big weekend for all of the Husky athletes and sportsfans!

The Men’s hockey team will be in a double header against Providence College and both games will be played on our home ice in Matthews. Tonight’s game will be at 7PM and tomorrow’s game will also be at 7PM! Come out and support your Huskies as they battle it out against Providence College, twice! Tickets available on myNEU.

And tomorrow at 9PM, in honor of Carnevale, ISSI will be hosting its 3rd annual ISSI International Venetian Masquerade Ball at The Colonnade Boston Hotel! On Sunday, Alpha Epsilon Phi is hosting its biggest Philanthropy event of the year! Ribbons on the Runway will be held at 7PM in the Curry Ballroom and will feature a fashion show with Northeastern Student Models, a silent auction and a cancer survivor speaker! The clothing and items in the auction are donated by local stores. Tickets are available on myNEU for $7 and all proceeds for the event go directly to Sharsheret Breast Cancer Foundation.

Film Screening, Coffee Hours, Networking and AAHW12!

Many of you have probably seen the graphic and thrilling “The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo” in theaters or read Steig Larsson’s novel but did you know that the Swedish- based film was already produced in Sweden before Hollywood got wind of it? Tonight as part of Carnevale, ISSI will be hosting an international Movie Screening of The Girl with Dragon Tattoo at 7:30 in 20 West Village F.

And today if you’re looking to brush up on your Spanish or French, the Latino/a Cultural Center is hosting a Hora del Café for Spanish Speakers at 3PM and an L’heure du Café for French speakers at 4PM. This is an opportunity to practice your conversational and reading skills with other Spanish or French speakers over a cup of coffee and pastries.

If you’re looking for a co-op and you’re interested in working at a Clean Tech company in a fun, fast-paced working environment, head on down to EnerNOC from 6-9PM tonight for their Networking Night for Northeastern University. If you’ve been attending any of the AAHW events and taking pictures, make sure to take part in the AAHW Snapshots Contest! In order to enter, you must like the “Asian American Center” Facebook page, go to events, snap pictures that capture this year’s theme of “expressions,” make the picture your status before 11:59PM on the day of the event and tag @Asian American Heritage week and @The Asian American Center!
