Last night the Marino Center was transformed into a swanky, lounge inspired space complete with dimly lit paper lantern lighting and red velvet curtains for the launch of Empower: The campaign for Northeastern University. This $1 billion comprehensive campaign aims to raise $500 million in philanthropic support and $500 million through industry and government partnerships by 2017.

This campaign will act as a powerhouse to support Northeastern’s rising momentum in areas like research and experimental education. For students, this means new co-op and research opportunities in areas like nanomedicine, personal health informatics and the digital arts, and investments that will supply faculty with the tools needed to confront global challenges. Northestern’s most prized asset will always be its students, so interactive exhibits and student/alumni ventures were put on display. These included a virtually interfaced robotic ankle trainer “vi-RABT,” Njabini Inc’s project to help potato producers in Kenya come together to collectively increase production and profits, and the Fresh Truck, a social venture that provides healthy food to urban areas without easy access to grocery stores.
