Northeastern Barkada is a student group dedicated to promoting Filipino heritage through cultural, educational, and social activities. While NU Barkada is known for hosting fun events like the Mr. PAAC Pageant and potluck dinners, they are also dedicated to helping others. When the Philippines were tragically hit by Typhoon Haiyan (also known as Typhoon Yolanda) in November 2013, NU Barkada sprang to action with various fundraising events. Typhoon recovery isn’t quick or easy, so NU Barkada is continuing their efforts in raising money for relief with a benefit concert this Friday, January 24 at 7:00PM in afterHOURS.
Dubbed “Tune Out the Typhoon,” the concert will feature performances by YouTube star Miggy Milla, Northeastern students, local talents, and more. A suggested donation of $5 will be collected at the door to benefit Gawad Kalinga’s “Operation Walang Iwanan.” Gawad Kalinga is a Philippines-based movement that builds homes for the homeless. The “Operation” is a campaign geared specifically toward typhoon relief efforts. Donations will help repair damaged roofs, replace fishing boats, and ultimately rebuild 20,000 new homes in regions hit hardest by Haiyan.
Mark your calendars for “Tune Out the Typhoon” this Friday night in afterHOURS and enjoy some good music for a good cause!
